J.D. Power and Associates has announced the results of its Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study.
APEAL asks recent owners and lessees how gratifying their new car is to own and drive based on the evaluation of 90 vehicle attributes. For 2009, the survey was conducted between February and May and had a total of 80,900 participants. Those surveyed were questioned immediately after their first 90 days of ownership.
The average score for new and redesigned models was 790 on a 1000 point scale.
Volkswagen had four segment level awards with its CC, GTI, Passat, and Tiguan. That's more than any other brand in 2009.
Porsche came away with yet another highest ranking nameplate award for the fifth straight year.
Observes noted that a vehicle's appeal seems to have little to do with its quality. For example, Honda, Toyota and Hyundai were among the industry's top seven in quality but finished below average in their ability to inspire an emotional response."
