What to Do After an Automobile Accident

Should you find yourself in an automobile accident, consider some suggestions from AAA.

  • Call an ambulance for anyone seriously injured.
  • Call the local, state or county police to the scene. If you are unable to call the police to the scene, make a report with the department at the earliest possible moment.
  • Secure names, addresses and phone numbers of all persons in the other vehicle. Do not assume the police will obtain all this information.
  • Obtain names, addresses and phone numbers of all witnesses the other vehicle. If you are uncertain if anyone witnessed the accident, ask around. Again, do not assume the police will obtain all this information.
  • Obtain license numbers and state registrations of other vehicles involved.
  • Exchange insurance information with the other party.
  • Measure any skid marks or other physical evidence. Note your physical surroundings.
  • Be observant.
  • Do not admit responsibility or sign any statements.
  • Do not make any statements to the other party, such as "I'm sorry." These can later be used against you.
  • Comply with State laws requiring the submission of a motor vehicle accident report. Keep a copy for your records.
  • Do not disclose your policy information other than the name of your insurance company and policy number.
  • Take photos of the damaged area to your vehicle and the other vehicle. Note any prior damage. It is advisable to carry a disposable camera in you glove compartment for this purpose. These photos are often used to defend fraudulent injury claims.
  • Report the claim immediately to your insurance company.
  • Cooperate in the investigation and settlement of your claim.
